Lay summaries offer researchers opportunities to increase the visibility and accessibility of their scientific studies and thus invite public dialogue. This workshop introduces graduate researchers to some of the ways in which lay summaries differ from scientific abstracts, the multiple purposes of lay summaries, and how lay summaries enhance science communication. Participants will write or revise a draft lay summary during dedicated writing time and receive feedback from facilitators and peers. Registration is required.
Metadata is information that describes a resource (i.e. data about data). When used effectively, metadata helps with usability, discovery, and storage of research. After completing this workshop, participants will be able to articulate what metadata is and how it is used, select a metadata standard that best suits their project and discipline, and select an appropriate tool for creating and maintaining metadata. Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free encyclopedia based on a model of open community-generated knowledge. However information gaps, biases, exclusions, and assumptions about “neutrality” means there remains lots of work to be done but in order to change the space we need to know how to edit.
