Literature Reviews: Writing

Literature reviews accomplish several purposes for scholars. In the introduction to a research article or thesis chapter, for example, writers review relevant research in order to establish a research gap or articulate a problem or need that the current study addresses. But how do writers summarize the scholarly conversation already underway and, then, join that conversation? This workshop introduces researchers to the typical structure of the literature review in research article introductions and theses, while accounting for variation in communicative purposes, audiences, and disciplinary differences. Honouring Indigenous Writers Book Club Discussion and Author Reading with Tenille K. Campbell and guests

Join UBC Library for a reading by book club author, Tenille Campbell, Dene/Métis author from English River First Nation in Northern Saskatchewan, followed by a conversation with special guests. This event is part of the Honouring Indigenous Writers on Wikipedia event, which seeks to improve the coverage of Indigenous writers on Wikipedia and to encourage diverse community editors to actively work to dissuade assumptions about Indigenous literature by raising their profile in this increasingly influential information source. Dissertations and Theses Formatting: Strategies For Successful Submission

Are you worried about getting your thesis or dissertation into the format required by the Faculty of Graduate Studies? When preparing the dissertation or thesis for submission, students must follow strict formatting requirements. Any deviation from these requirements may lead to rejection of the dissertation and delay in the conferral of the degree. Research Commons instructors will help you with your questions about the nuts and bolts of formatting: page layout, numbering, headings, front matter, and more. Registration is required.

Writing in the STEM Disciplines

This workshop introduces researchers to the typical organizational structure of a research article in the STEM disciplines, while accounting for variation in disciplinary differences. That is, some conventions and features of English academic writing remain constant across STEM disciplines, while others vary to account for discipline-specific norms and expectations of community members. Introduction to blockchain research skills

This introductory session will first provide an overview of multiple intersecting disciplines which contribute to the emerging blockchain technology sector: distributed computing, cryptography, economics, game theory, and archival science. We’ll then cover an example research methodology from each of these disciplines with a concrete use case in mind. Registration is required.
