Who should apply for the Writer-in-Residence position?
The successful applicant will be an established author who has demonstrated a sustained record of excellence through publication with a recognized and reputable publishing house. While there are no restrictions regarding literary genre or form, applicants must possess a distinguished literary reputation, evidenced by critical recognition, awards, or other notable achievements within the literary community.
While residing within the Metro Vancouver area is not required, the Writer-in-Residence position requires an occasional in-person presence on the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus throughout the residency period. Please note that the program does not provide financial support for travel expenses and applicants are expected to make their own arrangements for accommodation and transportation as necessary.
In addition to literary excellence, we strongly encourage applicants to propose thoughtful, innovative, and well-developed ideas for programming to be undertaken during their residency. Proposals that outline specific, creative, and engaging programming initiatives—such as workshops, lectures, community events, or collaborative projects—will be considered an important component of the selection process. As the primary objective of the Writer-in-Residence program is to cultivate a vibrant and inclusive literary culture at UBC and to foster meaningful engagement between the resident author and the university community, the strength, feasibility, and creativity of proposed programming will significantly strengthen an application.
Furthermore, prior experience in teaching, mentoring emerging writers, facilitating literary workshops, or engaging in community-based literary initiatives will be viewed as a considerable asset. We seek candidates who not only exemplify literary achievement but who are also committed to mentorship, education, and the broader development of literary arts within the academic and wider community.
