Speakers

Zoe Lam – Zoe Lam is PhD student at UBC Linguistics. Her research focuses on the phonology of tone, tone perception, and the interface of phonetics and phonology. Lam has done work/ been working on Cantonese tone perception, the intonation and discourse particles in East Asian languages, and the morphotonology of Nata (an Eastern Bantu language). Recently, she has started learning Medumba, a grassfield Bantu language. As a speaker-linguist of Cantonese, Lam is also intrigued by the pragmatics and syntax of Cantonese discourse particles.

Eleanor Yuen – Eleanor Yuen is an expert in library management and the former Head of UBC’s Asian Library. She has research expertise in Chinese-Canadian and Hong Kong issues. She has also developed a website entitled Historical Chinese Language Materials in British Columbia. She has been involved in community volunteer work in a variety of ways, including serving as founding director and past president of the Vancouver Hong Kong Forum Society and on the advisory board of Strathcona employment assistance services.

Hedy Law – Hedy Law graduated from the University of Chicago in 2007 with a Ph.D. in Music History and Theory. In 2005 she received the Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship of the American Musicological Society. In the same year she won the best student paper of the Midwest chapter of the American Musicology Society. She was Collegiate Assistant Professor and Harper-Schmidt Junior Fellow of the Society of Fellows at the University of Chicago from 2007 to 2009. From 2009 to 2012, she was Assistant Professor in Music History at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where she won a university-wide teaching award. Her articles have appeared in Cambridge Opera Journal and Musique et Geste en France, and are forthcoming in Oxford Handbook in Music Censorship; Noise, Audition, and Aurality; and the special issue on music and architecture in the journal CENTER: Architecture and Design in America. She is currently working on a book on music and pantomime in eighteenth-century France.

Personalized Medicine: Your Life, Your Genes, Your Health and Happiness

This talk is an informal and open forum that aims to bring the latest and greatest ideas in the area of the Life Sciences to the public. Each event is free to attend and will include a talk, networking opportunities and reception. This series focuses on Personalized Medicine and how the Life Sciences Institute faculty, staff and students are working to change clinical practice, improve health outcomes, and reduce health costs. In partnership with the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre’s Health Information Series, an ongoing public lecture series that take place in the Lower Mainland community, this talk will also be recorded for webcast viewing at a later date.

Sally Mennill – Reducing Risk: Caesarean Section at Vancouver's St. Paul's Hospital, 1950-1970

Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the Consortium and the BC History of Nursing Society. In the immediate post-WWII Years, the treatment of caesarean sections solidified and became entrenched in medical and social discourses. Canadian mothers and medical professionals embarked on a quarter-of-a-century consideration of how reduction of risk in c-sections could contribute to positive outcomes. This case study looks at the operation as it occurred at St. Paul’s Hospital, exploring social, technological, and professional changes in the operation through the lens of a large, urban, tertiary care facility to expose a shift to increased comfort with the operation. By examining medical records and prevailing medical and social discourses of the era, Sally Mennill traces this shift beyond the early-twentieth-century era of extreme caution with regard to surgical birth. Specifically, caesarean deliveries continued to take place in cases when the fetus had to be removed to prevent imminent death, but it was also relied upon increasingly in scenarios where the threat of death was not the primary determining factor. By the end of the 1960s, caesarean section had become an option even when existing records suggest that danger was not clear cut.

About the speaker:
Sally received her BA in History and Canadian Studies from Simon Fraser University in 2000, and her MA in Canadian Studies from Trent University in 2005. Her PhD, exploring caesarean sections in post-WWII British Columbia, is from UBC’s Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies (2012). Sally has been teaching at Douglas College since 2007, first as contract faculty and now as probationary regular faculty.

Intellectual Freedom on Freedom to Read Week

In celebration of Freedom to Read Week, the BCLA/CLA student chapters and the ALA student chapter at UBC’s School of Library, Archival and Information Studies are hosting a panel discussion on Intellectual Freedom. This discussion is not just the speakers’ personal experiences with banned or challenged books, but also their thoughts on how the concept of intellectual freedom informs and is informed by their work and choices as librarians, authors, publishers, and teachers. The panel will be primarily discussion-driven.

MACL Colloquia presents: Kit Pearson, An Open Book: The Redemption of Story

The colloquium is sponsored by the UBC Master of Arts in Children’s Literature Program, a multidisciplinary degree Program offered by the Creative Writing Program, the English Department, and the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies in the Faculty of Arts; and the Department of Language and Literacy Education in the Faculty of Education. Kit Pearson is the author of over thirteen books for children, including middle grade novels in all genres, short stories, picture books, and non-fiction. Her books have been published in Canada in English and French, in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, France, China, and Korea. Her books have been awarded such honours as the Canadian Governor General’s Literary Award for Children’s Literature. She has received seventeen awards for her writing, including the B.C. Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence in 2014.

Kit was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1947 and grew up there and in Vancouver, B.C. She received her B.A. from the University of Alberta, her M.L.S. from U.B.C.’s School of Library, Archival and Information Studies, and her M.A. from the Simmons College Center for the Study of Children’s Literature in Boston. She worked for ten years as a children’s librarian in Ontario and B.C., and is now a full-time writer living in Victoria. For more information see www.kitpearson.com

Salon Series 2015: Kabuki Dance and Noh

Kanjinchô, or the The Subscription List, is a matsubamemono dance play based on the classic noh play Ataka, the story is about Yoshitsune and his retainer Benkei trying to pass the barrier in disguise. Kanjinchô is one of the most popular plays in the kabuki repertoire and is one of the “Kabuki Jûhachiban” – or great 18 plays of kabuki.

Tomoe Arts focuses on kabuki dance plays based on noh themes and stories. It began in November with a tale of a flesh-eating demoness and continues in February to one of the greatest tales of duty and heroism, ending in April with the foolish drunken antics of two servants.

Tomoe Salon Series will be screening full videos of live performances from the Shôchiku’s Kabuki Meisakusen Series, which feature some of the greatest kabuki performers of the 20th and 21st centuries. The recordings have English language commentary, and after the performances, a discussion take place around the important story and performance elements. Green tea will be served as well.

This salon takes place February 2, 7.00-9.00pm at the Chilcotin Room (Rm 256), I.K Barber Learning Centre, 1961 East Mall, UBC. The nearest parking to the Centre are the Rose Garden and North Parkades. Parking at UBC is $7 after 5pm. UBC Parking map.

We frequently hear this word used on campus and in our communities in acknowledgement and thanks to our host nation(s). UBC Longhouse Elder-in-Residence, Larry Grant, has given countless welcomes to Musqueam territory at UBC gatherings, and he never omits the use of this adjective to describe his nation’s lands.

How do you view the land beneath your feet? Is it anchored in a legally framed history learned from a settler perspective, or have you taken the time to learn about how Indigenous peoples view our lands and the conversations around our rights connected to it? This exhibit honors and raises the awareness of legal histories exemplifying ground breaking changes in the relationships between the Crown and Aboriginal Peoples. As members of this community at UBC, and as (many of us) guests on Musqueam territory, it is our responsibility to inform ourselves about the history of the land in solidarity of the Elders who gave much to the teaching and learning that takes place here. You are invited to consider the legal challenges raised by the communities and represented by unceded’s curators.
