Walter “Robby” Robinson – Spotlight on the Church: How Sex Abuse Went Unnoticed for so Long, and What it Took to Expose it

Barber Learning Centre | November 12, 2016 8:15-9:30 pm |Mr. Robinson is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for The Boston Globe where he currently holds the title of Editor-at-Large. He led the Globe’s coverage of the Roman Catholic clergy sexual abuse scandal, for which the newspaper won, and he personally accepted, the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Mr. Robinson covered the White House for the Globe during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. In 1990 and 1991, he was the Globe’s Middle East Bureau Chief, and covered the first Persian Gulf War. He ran the newspaper’s investigative Spotlight Team for seven years. Mr. Robinson has been a journalism fellow at Stanford University and has received honorary degrees from Northeastern University and Emerson College in Boston. He was portrayed by Michael Keaton in the 2015 film Spotlight, the winner for Best Picture at the 88th Academy Awards.

ACAM Journal Launch – Tributaries

The Asian Canadian Asian Migration Studies program invites you to join us at it’s first academic ACAM journal launch. The ACAM undergraduate journal is a new student-run publication that reaches across various disciplines, genres, and forms, to consider topics around Asian and Asian Canadian identity. The journal seeks to recognize and encourage dialogue around these topics, and to grow as these dialogues continue. Submissions from all UBC students, disciplines and cultural contexts at are welcome. The inaugural issue, “Tributaries”, features collected poetry, short stories, visual art, and essays. This event will be taking place on the traditional, unceded, ancestral homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nation.

Barber Learning Centre Room 301l | When asked if he thought the British Colony of Hong Kong could be defended against an invasion by the Japanese in 1941, Winston Churchill replied, “not the slightest chance”. This prediction forms the background to the fatal decision by Ottawa 75 years ago to send Canadian troops into the maelstrom that became known as the Battle of Hong Kong. As the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Hong Kong approaches, Cameron Cathcart will provide an overview of the battle, its aftermath, and delve into the personal lives of the brave Canadians whose lives were changed forever.
