Beyond Borges: Telling Tales of Future Libraries

This presentation by University Librarian, Dr. Susan Parker, explores how forces and critical issues that are now shaping academic libraries are deepening their engagement with scholars and helping to build platforms and relationships that expand the pathways of creation, discovery, learning, and dialogue. We will consider several of these phenomena and how they may contribute to expanded roles for libraries and a new era of library work.

Fiction and Film

Many novels have been made into great films – but what is lost, and what is gained? This session will compare three works with three films, and explore how a novel is brought to life on the screen. The three texts and films reviewed are James Joyce’s The Dead, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon and Mordecai Richler’s Barney’s Version.

Christianity in China: Past, Present, Future

This session will study the history of Christianity in China, including the remarkable story of the early Jesuit missions, the relationship between Christianity and China’s modernization in the 20th century, and the state of Christianity in China today, including the role of underground churches and the state’s efforts to regulate religion.

Dreaming: Science, Substance and Suppositions

This session explores the unique rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep from a multitude of perspectives. Understand the physiological functions during REM sleep, research on dream content (nightmares, recurring dreams) and disorders of the dream state, and discuss the theories of the function of dreams, dream interpretation and the practice of lucid dreaming.

Global History Between the Wars

This session will explore a period of history that rise to divisive international trends and modern conflicts, discussing the history of revolutions, colonialism and the first decolonization of the 20th century, the Depression, fascism and the onset of the Second World War in Asia and Europe.

Once Upon a Pop-up

Rare Books and Special Collections at UBC Library is delighted to announce a new exhibition, located in the IKBLC Foyer: Once Upon a Pop-up!

The exhibition, curated by UBC Master of Library and Information Studies candidates Lucas Hill, Brooklyn Kemp, Sarah Khan, and Meaghan Smith, under the supervision of Professor Kathie Shoemaker, is a selection of pop-up books from RBSC’s children’s literature collection, ranging from the horror-filled to the historical, from the architectural to Alice in Wonderland.

Capture, Integrate, Reflect and Connect Learning with ePortfolios (CIRCle 2018)

This event explores the role of e-portfolios in higher education and professional practices. We will inquire into how e-portfolios might be used to create a bridge between academic learning and professional identity and how educators can cultivate an e-portfolio culture in disciplines where this does not exist. Sessions consist of presentations by faculty and students from all disciplines, and employers, on topics including reflective and collaborative processes, digital literacy and online ethics, distinguishing between personal and professional identities.
