Challenges for the Research Library in the 21st Century What are the challenges for the library in serving a research intensive university in the 21st century? During his visit to the UBC Library, Philip Kent will share some insights gleaned from leading university libraries around the world. He will also draw on his experience leading the Library at the University of Melbourne which consistently appears as the highest scoring Australian university in international rankings. Through the Universitas 21 Partnership and our similar profiles, there has been close collaboration at all levels between UBC and Melbourne.

Speaker Bio:

Philip G Kent is the University Librarian at The University of Melbourne. He commenced at the University in March 2009 following an extensive career in universities and CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency. Philip joined Melbourne at an important time. Following the Information Futures Commission and the development of a 10 year information strategy for the University, the Library is being reinvigorated under his leadership. Its history as a repository of vital research and cultural collections remains central to the role of the Library. A number of significant cultural collections including the University Archives, the largest non-government archive in Australia and the Grainger Museum also fall under Philip’s leadership. In addition the Library is developing innovative learning spaces to support the Learning and Teaching strategies of the University as well as providing appropriate technologies to support student learning. Melbourne has a prestigious pedigree as one of Australia’s top research universities.Consequently Library support for the University’s research, e-research and e-scholarship, research training and research data management agendas is a high priority.

This bibliography resource guide will help you find more information at UBC Library and the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre on the history of classical and ancient Greece that would complement your reading of Annabel Lyon’s Sweet Girl. The guide draws mainly on the collection in the Humanities and Social Sciences Division at Koerner Library, as well as the Rare Books and Special Collections at the Learning Centre, but also includes other materials found in the other Divisions of the UBC Library.

Sweet Girl

From the award-winning author of The Golden Mean,a captivating, wholly transporting new novel that follows Aristotle’s strong-willed daughter as she shapes her own destiny: an unexpected love story, a tender portrait of a girl and her father, and an astonishing journey through the underbelly of a supposedly enlightened society.

Aristotle has never been able to resist a keen mind, and Pythias is certainly her father’s daughter: besting his brightest students, refusing to content herself with a life circumscribed by the kitchen, the loom, and, eventually, a husband. Into her teenage years, she is protected by the reputation of her adored father, but with the death of Alexander the Great, her fortunes suddenly change. Aristotle’s family is forced to flee Athens for a small town, where the great philosopher soon dies, and orphaned Pythias quickly discovers that the world is not a place of logic after all, but one of superstition. As threats close in on her—a rebellious household, capricious gods and goddesses—she will need every ounce of wit she possesses, and the courage to seek refuge where she least expects it.

Facilitator Bio

Annabel Lyon is the chair of the UBC Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing’s Online Distance program. Annabel published her first book, Oxygen, a collection of stories, in 2000. The Best Thing for You, a collection of three novellas, followed in 2004 and was nominated for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. She has written two books for children, All Season Edie (2009) and Encore Edie (2010). Her first novel, The Golden Mean, was published in 2009 to great acclaim. It held the distinction of being the only book nominated that year for all three of Canada’s major fiction prizes: the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Governor General’s Award and the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize. Of the three, she won the Rogers Prize. The book has been translated into multiple languages. Her second novel, The Sweet Girl, a sequel to The Golden Mean, was published in fall, 2012.

Chris Lee – The Anglophone Eileen Chang

Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the Richmond Public Library (RPL) as part of its The Joy Of Reading lecture series. Eileen Chang is widely recognized as one of the most important Chinese writers of the twentieth century, but few people know about her many English language writings. This talk introduces this side of her fascinating career by presenting some recent research on her translation work. Presented by Prof. Chris Lee, Dept. of English, UBC.

Speaker Bio

Chris grew up around Vancouver and went to high school on the North Shore. He graduated from the Honours English Program at UBC and also studied critical theory and Asian American Studies at the University of California, Irvine. From the West Coast of Canada he moved to the East Coast of the United States to attend graduate school at Brown University. Before writing his dissertation, he spent a year in Beijing taking classes and doing research. He returned to Vancouver in 2006 and took up an appointment as Assistant Professor of English at UBC in 2007. Chris has been a Faculty Fellow of the College since 2007. Chris’ areas of research include Asian North American literatures and cultures, American Studies (with a focus on race/ethnicity and transnationalism), critical and literary theory (especially the Frankfurt School) and aesthetic philosophy.

Paradise Between Two Seas

From September 5 to 15, 2013, Mexico Fest 2013 presents Baja California Sur Artifacts, an art exhibition, located at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre’s second floor foyer. Baja California Sur (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈbaxa kaliˈfornja sur], lit. “Lower California South”), became state of Mexico in 1974. The second smallest Mexican state by population and the thirty-first admitted, the area was known as the South Territory of Baja California. The area of Baja California Sur is approximately 73,475 km2 (28,369 sq mi), or 3.57% of the land mass of Mexico and occupies the southern half of the Baja California peninsula. It is bordered to the north by the state of Baja California, to the west by the Pacific Ocean, and to the east by the Gulf of California, also known as the “Sea of Cortés,” Baja California Sur has maritime borders with Sonora and Sinaloa to the east across the Gulf of California.

Baja California Sur is subdivided into five municipalities, including:

The state includes Loreto, the historic first capital of all three Californias (Baja California Sur, Baja California, and California), the town of Santa Rosalía which is the site of a historic church designed by Gustave Eiffel. The smoke stack of the silver smelters in El Triunfo, Baja California Sur was designed by Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel never visited Baja California Sur, rather his early architectural works were sold as ‘cookie cutter’ designs and can be seen in hundreds of locations around the world. Although the silver industry ended full scale production in the 1950s the stack and ruins of the silver industry remain as a significant landmark today.

Baja California Sur is characterized by deserts, mountains and coastal flatlands. The climate is arid in most parts of the state, with the southernmost tip being tropical. Plants such as cardon, mezquite and wild-lettuce; animals including mountain lions; and other plants and wildlife characteristic of this ecosystem are found in the Central and Vizcaino Deserts of Baja California Sur.

The Proverbial Calligrapher by the Westcoast Calligraphy Society

A proverb is a simple and concrete saying, popularly known and repeated, that expresses a truth based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity. The Proverbial Calligrapher is an exhibition that examines the truth of calligraphy through the works of artists who spell out their ideas and expressions through brush strokes and ink.

The Westcoast Calligraphy Society is an enthusiastic group of people with a common bond–a love of all things calligraphic. Members share knowledge of design, colour, illustration, bookbinding, paper making and our other talents with everyone interested in the art of letters with more experienced members teaching beginning and more advanced calligraphy throughout the Lower Mainland.

The Society began life in September 1978 as the Society for Italic Handwriting, B. C. Branch. As the Society grew and its members’ interests expanded, the focus broadened to all types of calligraphy and in June 1986, the name was changed to Westcoast Calligraphy Society.

Red Tails and Dragon Tales

On June 28, 2013 at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, a historic summit of two groups of WWII veterans that faced discrimination: the Tuskegee Airmen and Chinese-Canadian soldiers was held. Meeting for the first time ever, these aging veterans will share their stories with the public on how they overcame prejudice to serve their countries with courage and distinction. The Tuskegee Airmen are African-American pilots who fought in World War II. Formally, they formed the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Corps (United States Army Air Forces after 20 June 1941).

While most of their ranks have passed away, a few remaining veterans, now mostly in their late 80s and 90s, will meet to share their stories. During WWII, the Tuskegee airmen were the first group of African-American aviators to fly in combat for the US armed forces. At the time, the American military was still racially segregated. Many felt African-Americans lacked the intelligence and skill to perform anything beyond basic, menial tasks in military duty. Despite this segregation and prejudice, the Tuskegee Airmen went on to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups in the war. They were dubbed “the Red Tails” after one fighter group painted their P47s and later P51s with a red tail. Please join us for this historic occasion. This UBC opening symposium took place on June 28, 2013, 2013 at the Victoria Learning Theatre (Room 182), Irving K. Barber Learning Centre as part of the Chapman Discussion Series.

"Neither/nor, Both/and"

The politics of identity and location are inexplicably tied to the ways in which space and the self are mutually constitutive. The self as a site, is one of continuous splitting, doubling, and grafting, of histories, markings, and vulnerabilities. In this exhibition of new photographs and small sculptural works, artist Clare Yow focuses on the mobile and malleable body as material for interrogating personal, political lived experience. Togetherness-in-difference is an imperative issue for 21^st century cultural and identity politics. Holding a doubled relationship or dual loyalty to the idea of places, is for Clare, at once invigorating and troubling, rewarding and tiring.

Biography

Clare Yow is a Vancouver-based artist, holding a Master in Fine Arts in Visual Art from the University of British Columbia and an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photographic Studies from Ryerson University. Her art practice is foregrounded in the everyday and seemingly unremarkable as subject matter, material and process. With ongoing interests that lie in navigating what it means to be located within the triple bind, hyphenated existence, and imaginary homeland of Chinese-Canadian femininity, Clare’s work seeks to explore how conditions of in-between-ness come to exist in relation to her particular subjectivities.

It is of note that Clare was born in Singapore 100 years after the Chinese Immigration Act of 1885, and that on Canada Day this year, it was 90 years ago that the Chinese Exclusion Act first came into effect.

In September 2006, the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at the University of British Columbia Library announced the BC History Digitization Program. The focus of the program is to promote increased access to British Columbia’s historical resources, including providing matching funds to undertake digitization projects that will result in free online access to our unique provincial historical material. Below is a list of successful applicants for 2013.

Description: The Spencer Entomological Collection will image 1000 B.C. insect specimens from three views using their Leica LAS montage system.

Project Title: A legacy of the flora of British Columbia: Digital archiving and presentation of the preserved plant collections of John W. Eastham (1879 – 1968)

Description: The project will digitize issues of the University’s student newspaper from 1962, the year of the school’s founding, to 1992. Scans will be keyword searchable and freely available online via the TWU Archives website.

Project Title: Cassiar Asbestos Mining Corporation & Townsite fonds Photographs Series Digitization & Access Project

Description: This project will provide digital access to 4000 British Columbia Postcards including early 20th century black and white postcards to 1950’s Technicolor cards. The postcards depict towns and places from every corner of the province including rare postcards from now vanished communities.

Project Title: Landscape Lost: Forestry and Life in the Duncan River Valley
Organization: Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art and History

Description: This project will provide online access to photographs documenting the Duncan River Valley and forest industry between 1947 and 1952, before the construction of the Duncan Dam which flooded the valley and altered the landscape and industry forever.

Project Title: The Industrial and Commercial Development of Trail, BC
Organization: Trail Historical Society
Amount: $1560
Description: The project will provide access to a large collection of negatives and original prints for W.J. Carpenter and the Hughes Brothers taken during the city’s industrial boom. Images range from panoramic industrial scenes to the steady development of Trail’s commercial core.

Project Title: Digitization of court files from the John Keenlyside Legal Research Collection.
Organization: UBC Library Rare Books and Special Collections, Digital Initiatives

Description: The project will digitize and make available 323 case files from early B.C. courts created from 1858 to 1891. The case files document people’s interaction with the court system of early British Columbia with particular focus on Chinese and Aboriginal people.

Project Title: A Legacy of Flora of British Columbia: Digital Archiving and Presentation of the Preserved Plant Collections of John Davidson Correspondence Volunteers (1912-1930)

Description: The project will cover the creation of a digital archive of 2500 pressed plant specimens documenting BC’s natural history.

Project Title: Karl Spreitz Film Archive Digitization Project

Description: The project will digitize a portion of Karl Spreitz’s extensive film archive focusing on BC artists, First Nations cultural heritage, experimental art films and BC historical films.

Project Title: bcgenesis: The Colonial Despatches 1861

Description: Having previously digitized the Colonial Despatches from 1846, to 1860, the project will continue by digitizing Vancouver Island and BC despatches for 1861, linking them page for page to transcriptions of each despatch.

Project Title: Glass Plates of British Columbia: photos by Trueman, Thomson, Bailey Brothers and the Dominion Photograph Company

Description: The project will digitize and make available online the library’s unique collection of glass plate negatives depicting the early history of British Columbia from the 1890s to the 1920s.

Description: The project will digitize and make available a selection of reports, studies, ephemera and publications created by the District of West Vancouver since its founding in 1912.

Project Title: Historical Photograph Digitization Project – Year 2

Description: This phase of the project will make 1500 historical images depicting the life and development of West Vancouver available online collated with 300 pages of family and local histories.

Project Title: For Those Tired of Questions: Digitizing the Whistler Answer
Organization: Whistler Museum and Archives Society

Description: This project will digitize the complete run of the Whistler Answer, Whistler’s alternative culture newspaper from the 1970s.
