Developing a Course-Level Graduate TA Program

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) play a pivotal role in undergraduate education; however, they often receive insufficient professional development to prepare them for effective teaching in a university setting. In the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, we have incorporated a course-level GTA development program into a large-enrollment course with 10 GTAs in order that the program is on going, addresses immediate issues, and builds strong relationships within the teaching team. In this session, we will present the course context, components of our model, and analysis of our interviews with GTAs that have participated in the program. We will discuss the success and challenges of our program and invite the audience to join the discussion on how such programs might be applied in different courses.

At this time we require everyone – UBC affiliated or otherwise – to register for the CTLT events system. If you already have a CWL please sign in. However, if you do not have a campus-wide login, then please register for a BASIC cwl account (you will see basic as the bottom option on the 3rd screen).
