The election of Donald Trump, and an America that is regionally and culturally advancing a “conservative” and even “populist” agenda, has aroused both cultural and racial divisions that reflect the extent to which slavery and segregation have shaped American society and politics.
Many novels have been made into great films – but what is lost, and what is gained? This session will compare three works with three films, and explore how a novel is brought to life on the screen. The three texts and films reviewed are James Joyce’s The Dead, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon and Mordecai Richler’s Barney’s Version.
