How our contributors are using our webcasts

The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies (SLAIS) Colloquium Series brings distinguished speakers from across the world to UBC to provide unique learning opportunities for students, staff, faculty, alumni, and members of the broader UBC community. Webcasting these talks through the I.K. Barber Learning Centre extends our reach dramatically – we’re able to serve those members of our community who cannot come to campus, and those whose schedules are unable to accommodate a mid-day lecture. Furthermore, the recordings make these talks reusable learning objects: the lectures can be used to supplement instruction in SLAIS classes, making these talks more than a one-time opportunity.

UBC Continuing Studies collaborates with other UBC departments and community partners to provide free public lectures and other learning events that share perspectives and encourage debate on interdisciplinary topics such as civic responsibility, social justice, health and wellbeing, culture and the arts, sustainability, and much more. The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre is a very important and much appreciated partner. Through its webcasts, the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre makes it possible for many more people, from across Canada and around the world, to attend these UBC events and to include them in other learning and community activities.

Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society (VAHMS) finds the webcast capability of IKBLC very valuable in extending the life span of its programming executed in partnership with UBC. Two shining examples are the webcasts made of a talk during explorASIAN 2010 by acclaimed writer Judy Fong Bates, and the National AHM Video Conference which connected Asian Heritage Month communities across the country during explorASIAN 2011. These webcasts are still being viewed today by many people who were not able to attend those events physically at UBC during the annual festivals. The webcasts has long shelf life beyond the annual festivals and form part of the physical legacy of Asian Heritage Month activities in Canada.

The staff at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre has been phenomenal at working closely with Green College to sponsor the webcasting of many of our interdisciplinary talks and events. IKBLC has already filmed and posted almost three dozen Green College events with many more planned for 2012. Allan Cho is readily available to answer any questions and works with us to ensure consistency and high quality webcasting that reflects the high quality of Green College’s programming.

Many thanks to the Irving K. Barber Centre webcast for preserving conference presentations to be shared locally and globally. Conferences come and go much too quickly, for presenters and participants, and one is left with a quest to confirm learning exchange which the IKBC website does so very capably. I spoke at the Citizenship without the Nation – Relevance: The Nation and the City (October 2010) and now can share that with others seeking to interrogate the various meaning of “citizenship” from academic, scholarly and community perspectives.

The staff at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre has been great to work with on our alumni programming. Their professionalism and passion has helped us grow current programming by partnering with alumni UBC on our Your Next Step career development offerings; the webcasts of our events are now available to alumni all over the world and has enabled us to engage with more alumni.

Emma Talbott, Alumni Development Officer, alumni UBC
